Green Witch Diary
Things we did in 2002

We get involved in a wide range of events such as talks at schools and amateur astronomy clubs, special trade days, star parties and observing trips. Here's a list of the things we did in 2002. If your club or organisation would like Green Witch to attend one of your events, or organise a special event for you, please contact us.

The list is arranged in reverse chronological order.

  • November 2002

  • Friday, 29th November 2002 Sawtry Astronomical Society
Neil gave a talk on the Whirlpool Star Party and our recent trip to Ireland. As always we enjoyed meeting up with old friends who made us particularly welcome. Despite the poor observing weather, which Harry Milford arranges without fail, the evening was great fun.

    October 2002

  • Friday to Sunday, 4th to 6th October 2002 17th Whirlpool Star Party, Birr, Ireland
This is one of the events we thoroughly recommend. For details of last year's meetings Click Here.

    September 2002

  • Saturday, 21st September 2002 BAA Meeting in Cambridge
Green Witch was there with a trade stand that created a great deal of interest.
  • Friday 6th to Sunday 15th September 2002 8th Equinox Sky Camp
Guest speakers, astro boot sale, telescope tours, prize raffle and an evening barbecue all feature at this annual event organised by the Loughton Astronomical Society and sponsored by BC&F. The main event day was Saturday 7th September; Wendy and Lesley were there with a small trade stand and Neil joined them, after the showroom at Dry Drayton closed, to try out different telescopes on a dark site. We also took along one of the new second generation night-vision scopes which impressed everyone who tried it.

    June 2002

  • Friday, 28th June 2003. Death of our dear Judy
Neil's wife Judy died after a long battle with Breast Cancer. Judy was our company secretary, book-keeper and accountant and her loss was a substantial blow to Green Witch as well as being a personal tragedy. She is sadly missed by all.

    March 2002

  • Saturday, 23rd March 2002 Institute of Astronomy, Cambridge
The IoA held an an open day from 2 to 5 pm. Green Witch was there with a display of telescopes and accessories. We set up a couple of telescopes to show people the Moon and were still there in the evening showing Jupiter and Saturn.
  • Wednesday, 20th March 2002 Lunch at Jenny's
After-lunch talk by Neil at a church fund-raising event.
  • Thursday, 14th March 2002 West Suffolk College
The College held an open day at Newmarket Race Course. Lesley was there showing telescopes to groups of school children.
  • Wednesday, 6th March 2002 Papworth Astronomy Club
Astronomy Open Evening. Green Witch was there with telescopes and accessories on display.
  • Monday, 4th March 2002 Kings School, Cambridge
A talk by Neil on the Solar System.

    February 2002

  • Sunday to Wednesday, 24th to 27th February 2002 Focus at the NEC
Neil and Lesley visited the exhibition on Tuesday to find out what's new from the photographic world that might be useful for astronomy.
  • Thursday, 28th February 2002 Great Gransden Brownies
A star party for the Brownies and a chance for them to earn their Stargazer Badges. A very enjoyable evening with lots of enthusiasm from the Brownies. A very bright meteor added to the excitement of seeing Saturn and Jupiter through telescopes.
  • Saturday, 23rd February 2002 Astronomy for Intermediates
A one-day course intended for people with basic knowledge of astronomy who would like to learn more. Ideal for those who have attended our 'Astronomy for Absolute Beginners' course. Please contact us for further details.
  • Friday, Saturday 8,9 February 2002 Astrofest
Lesley and Neil attended Astrofest on the Saturday and met a lot of old friends.

    January 2002

  • Wednesday, 30th January 2002 The Isaac Newton Group of Telescopes
Neil gave a talk to the Letchworth and District Astronomical Society.
  • Saturday, 26th January 2002 Astronomy for Absolute Beginners
Another chance to attend one of our extremely popular one-day introductory courses. For further details click here. This was the first course to be held in our new unit. We have partitioned off an area to be used as an informal 'club room' for Cauldron Club members, and we used it for the course. It's very convenient as it gives us all a chance to meet and talk to the course members, even on a busy Saturday.
