The Telrad Finder makes it much easier to point your telescope. It removes the ambiguity often experienced when looking through a finder-scope and is one of the best but simplest innovations of recent years. The Telrad is a 'head-up display' and works by superimposing three concentric circles on the sky. When you look through it you see the sky in its natural, unmagnified state, with a red bulls-eye target on top of it. Just move your telescope until the target is over the object of interest, then look for it in your conventional finder or in the main telescope, confident that you are looking in the right place.
The Telrad comes with a detachable base which you attach to the telescope tube with the double-sided sticky pads provided. Align it on a terrestrial target as you would with any other finder then you are ready to go. Spare bases are available so you can move the Telrad from telescope to telescope.
Once you use the Telrad you will wonder how you managed without one. Many sky-mapping programs, such as SkyMap Pro and Starry Night, will superimpose a Telrad target over their star charts, enabling you to see in advance just how big the target will look in real life.
Use the Telrad on any medium to large telescope. For smaller scopes, consider the Rigel Quikfinder or Celestron Star Pointer.
